WASHINGTON, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Greenpeace said it pulled a contract with a publisher after its calendar was released with a photo taken by a Frenchman tied to the Rainbow Warrior bombing.

The 2015 calendar for Greenpeace U.S.A. features a photograph taken by Alain Mafart-Renodier, a French soldier involved in the bombing of Greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior, in 1985.

Greenpeace photographer Fernando Pereira was killed in the bombing.

Greenpeace said it wasn't aware of the origin of the photograph and neither was its publisher, Workman Publishing, until after it was released to distributors. The advocacy group said it issued a recall request, but Workman refused, calling for a reimbursement of $250,000 for lost profits.

"As a result, we have returned all royalty payments for the 2015 calendar we received from Workman. Greenpeace will not be making any money from this calendar," the advocacy group said in a Wednesday statement. "We have also decided to end our business relationship with Workman and the company will not be producing future Greenpeace calendars."

In June, Greenpeace International issued an apology to donors after it lost more than $5 million in foreign currency exchange contracts.

For 2013, the advocacy group said it had a budget deficit of $9.2 million.
