"Special attention was paid to the issues of Russian natural gas exports to Italy," the Russian company said in a statement. "The parties also discussed the current state of the South Stream construction."

Italy is the third-largest importer of Russian natural gas in the world. Last year, Gazprom delivered 533 billion cubic feet of natural gas to Italy.

Italy also serves as the terminal country for Gazprom's planned South Stream natural gas pipeline. South Stream would add diversity to a Gazprom export program for Europe, a program dependent in large part on transit networks in Ukraine.

South Stream will deliver an estimated 2.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to Europe when it enters into service in late 2015.

Gazprom's meeting follows an announcement from the consortium controlling the Trans-Adriatic pipeline the Greek government ratified a host agreement for the project. TAP would bring natural gas from Azerbaijan to Europe and is part of a European effort to add diversity to an energy market linked to Russia.
