WASHINGTON, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The model year 2014 Volkswagen Jetta had the best fuel economy for compact cars while Ford, Chevy and Dodge led for trucks, the EPA and Energy Department said.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy jointly released the 2014 fuel economy guide for passenger vehicles for the 2014 model year.
For compact cars, the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta had the best fuel economy with 45 miles per gallon, the combined average for highway and city driving. The Ford Focus hybrid electric vehicle led in the same class with 105 mpg, based on a conversion factor used to convert electricity into fuel economy.
The Chevrolet Spark EV, a subcompact car, had the best performance of any class of car for model year 2014 with 119 mpg.
The Dodge Ram HFE two-wheel drive led the class for standard pickup trucks with 21 mpg while Ford and Chevy led in most other truck classes. The Toyota RAV 4 EV led in terms of hybrid electric passenger trucks with 76 mpg.
"By providing reliable, user-friendly fuel economy information, the Fuel Economy Guide is helping Americans choose the right fuel efficient vehicle for their family and business and save money at the pump," Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said in a statement Tuesday.
The EPA estimates the entire U.S. transportation sector accounted for 28 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions in 2011, compared with 20 percent for the industrial sector.
