KIEV, Ukraine, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Italian energy company said it reviewed the shale natural gas potential in Ukraine during talks with the country's prime minister in Kiev.
Eni last year signed a deal with state-owned energy companies to serve as the operator in nine blocks of unconventional shale developments in the Lviv Basin.
Eni Chief Executive Officer Paolo Scaroni met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov for "cordial and constructive" talks about the country's energy future.
"Eni's CEO shared with the prime minister the developments of the company's ongoing activities in Ukraine, affirming Eni's positive vision of the exploration potential that the country presents in the unconventional gas," the company said in a statement.
Eni described the Lviv Basin, near the Polish border, as one of the brighter shale prospects in Eastern Europe.
Ukraine is among the Eastern European countries eyeing potential shale gas reserves along with Poland and Lithuania. The Polish government estimates it has as much as 3.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
