Gazprom finds its first North African gas

MOSCOW, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- More than 2 million cubic feet of gas per day flowed from an exploratory well drilled in Algeria, Russian energy company Gazprom announced.

Gazprom along with its Algerian partners at Sonatrach, the largest oil and gas company in Africa, announced they recovered 2.1 million cubic feet of natural gas at an exploration well in Algeria, the first discovery in North African for the Russian gas monopoly.

Alexei Miller, the chief executive at gas monopoly Gazprom, said recently that his company was interested in Algerian assets if BP was willing to move on its portfolio there.

BP is looking to raise money to cover expenses from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill by offloading overseas assets.

Natural gas makes up about 62 percent of the hydrocarbons in Algeria, with oil making up about 34.5 percent of the energy balance. Gazprom said it recovered 362 barrels of oil from the exploration well.

Gazprom won concessions to explore for hydrocarbons in Algeria in 2008.
