COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Western capitalism is responsible for blocking the development of green energy technology, including nuclear power, the Iranian president said in Denmark.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad left Tehran on Thursday to attend the international climate summit in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Ahmadinejad in his address to the delegates blamed capitalism for advancing a mentality that encourages excessive use of carbon-based energy sources, Iran's state-funded broadcaster Press TV reports.
"A profit-making approach to the world resources must be avoided," he said.
He advocated a global policy that would allow all nations to pursue clean and renewable energy resources, including nuclear power, to counter the effects of climate change.
"All countries must gain access to new technologies to diversify their energy resources and be able to use clean and renewable energy such as wind, solar, sea tide, geothermal and nuclear energies," he said.
Iran is under fire for a controversial nuclear program that Tehran insists is for civilian use.
He added that world powers should spend more money on cutting the levels of greenhouse gas emissions than they do on their defense budgets.
