MOSCOW, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The Russian government has decided to construct the Baltic Nuclear Power Plant in the Kaliningrad Region.
The Pravitel'stva Rossiiskoi Federatsii government Internet portal reported Tuesday that Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed the order for the Baltic Nuclear Power Plant's construction, which will have a total installed capacity of 2,300 megawatts generated by two reactors.
According to the governmental Web site, the construction of the Baltic Nuclear Power Plant's first power unit will be built out in 2010-16 and the facility's second reactor in 2012-18.
Investment in the construction of the Baltic Nuclear Power Plant will be open to both Russian and foreign investors. Kaliningrad was chosen to house the Baltic Nuclear Power Plant after the Russian Energy Ministry and Rosatom state nuclear energy corporation were instructed by the government to make proposals for locating new Russian electric power facilities up to 2020. The site was chosen in part because Kaliningrad is currently dependent on gas and energy imports.
