RWE, a partner to the Nabucco gas pipeline project for Europe, has moved in the Caspian region to tap key resources in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.

The German company said it was preparing for participation in tenders for the export of natural gas from the offshore Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan as part of its role in Nabucco, the Azerbaijan Business Center reports.

Nabucco would bring about 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas each year to European customers from Caspian and Middle Eastern suppliers.

The pipeline would run from the Caspian region through Turkey to Austria along a route through Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. Regional hosts and interested parties expressed their support for Nabucco during a summit in Ankara in July.

RWE opened its offices in Azerbaijan in July.
