Siemens wins offshore wind contract

BERLIN, April 21 (UPI) -- Germany-based Siemens Energy announced it signed a contract to supply wind turbines to the first commercial offshore wind farm in Germany.

The contract was signed with EnBW Energie Baden-Wurttemberg, for the supply of 21 SWT 2.3-93 wind turbines that will be installed at the Baltic 1 offshore wind farm.

"2009 promises to be a record year for offshore wind power," said Rene Umlauft, chief executive of the Siemens Renewable Energy Division.

Baltic 1 will be located about 16 kilometers north of the Darss-Zingst peninsula and will cover about seven square kilometers.

Work on the 48.3-megawatt wind farm is expected to begin in early 2010 and be completed later the same year.
