Gazprom inks deal with Equatorial Guinea

MALABO, Equatorial Guinea, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Gazprom chief Alexei Miller signed an agreement with Equatorial Guinea to develop the African nation's gas fields and cooperate in the general energy sector.

Russian energy giant Gazprom signed the deal during the weekend with the country's gas firm, EG LNG, to develop the estimated 1.4 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves in the African nation, Russian daily ITAR-TASS reported.

Equatorial Guinea also boasts some of the largest oil fields in Africa, with its offshore Zafiro and Alba fields producing more than 360,000 barrels per day.

The country is one of the largest producers of hydrocarbons in the region, making it third in the south behind Angola and Nigeria.

The terms of the Gazprom deal were not specified. Houston's Marathon Oil is the majority shareholder in EG LNG.
