India sets up waste-to-energy power plants

NEW DELHI, March 12 (UPI) -- India said it set up 31 waste-to-energy power projects in eight state and 36 wind power plants in nine states.

The Ministry for New and Renewable Energy said in a statement that 31 waste-to-energy-based power projects with 68.62 megawatt capacity in eight states and 36 demonstration wind power projects with 70.09 MW capacity in nine states were set up with financial assistance from the ministry.

It said commercial wind power projects of about 7,844 MW capacity have been installed in the country through private investment.

"Resource assessments are being carried out for power generation from wind and biomass resources in the country, including the backward and rural areas," Vilas Muttemwar, the minister, said in a statement.

He said wind-solar hybrid systems and biomass gasfiers are being installed for meeting the energy requirements in various states.
