RIL discovers gas off Andhra coast

NEW DELHI, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Indian private major Reliance Industries Ltd. says it has discovered gas off the coast of Andhra Pradesh state.

Mukesh Ambani-controlled RIL said it came across gas in an exploration acreage off the Andhra coast. The company made its biggest gas find in this region in 2002. The company is evaluating the size and commercial viability of the gas strike, its 38th so far, said a company official.

The strike was made in an acreage the company won in the third round of the government's acreage auction. Gas was struck at a total depth of 2,820 meters, the company official said.

In 2002, the official said Reliance found the world's biggest gas reserve for that year. It has projected a peak supply of 80 million cubic meters per day of gas from that acreage. Subsequently, it also struck gas and oil in the Kavery basin and Gujarat, the official noted.

RIL also made a significant oil and gas discovery in the Krishna-Godavari basin in southern Andhra Pradesh state. The company says it is gearing up to commercially market its oil and gas from the K-G basin.
