TOKYO, July 31 (UPI) -- Japan and Indonesia agreed Monday to boost energy cooperation, with Jakarta calling for more Japanese investment to increase development.
Under the agreement, Tokyo pledged to offer aid in designing Jakarta's atomic power policy, a Japanese official said, the Kyodo news agency reported.
Purnomo Yugiantoro, Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources minister, and Toshihiro Nikai, Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry minister, said both countries should work closely to promote energy cooperation.
Indonesia is the No.1 provider of liquefied natural gas to Japan, but supplies have been decreasing recently. Tokyo has asked Jakarta to maintain previous supply levels, officials said.
In hopes to diversify energy resources, Indonesia is planning to build the country's first nuclear power plant in 2015.
The Indonesian minister met with company representatives from the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan and major power firms such as Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Chubu Electric Power Co.
