India, U.S. discuss energy security

WASHINGTON, April 10 (UPI) -- Indian Minister of Science and Technology Kapil Sibal's visit to Washington was dominated by discussions of energy security.

India's semi-official Press Trust of India news agency reported Sunday that while in Washington, Sibal, who was town for a Bi-National Commission on Science and Technology, met with Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., Rep. Joseph Crowley, D-N.Y. and Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y.

According to an official statement released during the visit, while the focus of the meetings was the landmark Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear deal signed by U.S. President George W. Bush and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the former's visit to India in early March, other issues relating to bilateral science and technology cooperation were also discussed.

Sibal's agenda also included a number of panels and meetings at Washington think tanks, where he emphasized the importance of the U.S. partnership to India, saying that the two countries were natural partners, who benefited from increasing collaborative ties.
