Research framework to be developed

BRUSSELS, May 19 (UPI) -- The European Defense Agency and the European Commission announced plans to strengthen cooperation on research for security and defense.

The EDA and the European Commission announced plans to establish a "European Framework Cooperation for Security and Defense Research" in a move to boost situational-awareness capabilities and eliminate potential overlapping research, the EDA reported.

Officials said the research framework will act as a structure for coordinating research investment and save taxpayer money.

"Our existing cooperation with the commission will be brought to a more intensive level," Alexander Weis, EDA chief executive, said in a statement. "The aim is to synchronize research and allow for mutual use of results, as technologies are increasingly of a dual-use nature for military and civilian operators."
