CARTAGENA, Colombia, May 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration and Colombian security authorities have commissioned the Port of Cartagena's nuclear non-proliferation system.
The NNSA and the Colombian Directorate of Customs and Taxation have installed next-generation radiation-detection equipment at Colombia's Port of Cartagena as part of a U.S.-Colombian effort to strengthen the port's security infrastructure, the NNSA reported.
NNSA and Colombian officials marked the commissioning of the new threat-detection technologies, installed as part of the NNSA's Megaports program, at a recent ceremony.
"Our efforts under both the Megaports Initiative and (container-security initiative) directly contribute to the non-proliferation objectives shared by the U.S. and Colombia, the security of our two nations and the safety of the global maritime system," Ken Baker, NNSA principal assistant deputy administrator for defense nuclear non-proliferation, said in a statement.
