KHARTOUM, Sudan, April 13 (UPI) -- The U.N.-AU joint operation in the Darfur region of Sudan reported that security conditions have calmed following a recent surge of attacks.
The mission of the United Nations and African Union, known as UNAMID, said Monday that peacekeeping patrols since Friday have experienced a relative level of calm after a surge in volatility following the March 4 International Criminal Court indictment of Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir for alleged war crimes, the United Nations reported.
UNAMID conducted 22 confidence-building patrols, 15 escort patrols and other operations since Friday. The mission reported that, despite some acts of banditry from rebel groups in Darfur, violence in the region has slowed.
"The security situation is now relatively calm despite some continuing acts of banditry and carjacking in North and West Darfur," the United Nations said in a news release.
