KATHMANDU, Nepal, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- The United Nations warned leaders in Nepal Monday that ongoing impunity in the country is only encouraging the use of violence.
The U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal called on security authorities in Nepal to end the impunity and bring those suspected of violence to justice.
The OHCHR-Nepal issued a statement Monday citing the death of 15-year-old Maina Sunuwar in 2005 and called for the immediate arrest of former army personnel who were involved in the torture, the United Nations reported.
"The lack of progress in the case of Maina Sunuwar is emblematic of the overall lack of accountability for human rights violations which occurred both during and after the conflict in Nepal between 1996 and 2006," OHCHR-Nepal said in the release.
OHCHR-Nepal officials say there has been progress made in Nepal since the dissolution of the Gyanendra monarchy in 2008, but without ending impunity and establishing accountability, perpetrators of political violence will continue to be emboldened.
