BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Top authorities in Azerbaijan participated in a workshop Tuesday aimed at strengthening democratic control of the country's armed forces.
The Organization for Security and Cooperation began a two-day workshop Tuesday in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku. Leaders from Azerbaijan's military, social and welfare associations are participating, the OSCE reported.
Officials say the workshop is designed to promote a greater understanding and strengthening of the foundations of a democratically controlled armed forces in Azerbaijan. The workshop is also focused on ensuring that military personnel protect human rights and social welfare.
"Cooperation among non-governmental organizations, associations, the parliament and the military is needed to support those who are serving or have served in the armed services," John MacGregor, politico-military program officer of the OSCE Office in Baku, said in a statement.
"Civil society and the military must work together to create democratic control of armed forces."
