Feb. 9 (UPI) -- BAE Systems has been awarded a contract for repair work on the USS Philippine Sea, a Flight II Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser.

The deal, announced Thursday by the Department of Defense, is valued at more than $9.6 million under a firm-fixed-price contract.

The contract provides the USS Philippine Sea with "structural and tank repairs, propulsion system repairs, ventilation and auxiliary system repairs, temporary services, habitability preservations, structural preservations, ship alterations and miscellaneous repairs," the Pentagon said in a press release.

Work on the contract will occur in Jacksonville, Fla., and is expected to be complete by March 2019.

The contract includes an option for Pentagon officials to authorize additional work -- if exercised the cumulative value of the contract would surge to more than $71.8 million.

The total amount of the current contract award will be obligated to BAE Systems at the time of award from Navy fiscal 2018 operations and maintenance funds.

The obligated funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
