IAI installs Argentina-Bolivia border crossing

By Richard Tomkins

Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Israel Aerospace Industries has installed a new border crossing in Argentina, the company announced this week.

The crossing with Bolivia at La Quiaca is the first of four secured crossings that Argentina's Home Security Ministry has ordered under a contrac worth tens of millions of dollars, IAI said in a news release Tuesday. IAI and Elta Systems' Electronic Defense Group outfitted the checkpoint with a large-scale ground system that includes radar, electro-optical and infrared sensors and other surveillance and communication items.

IAI said additional work at La Quiaca will include the installation of unmanned aerial systems, including the BirdEye 650D.

"The integration of IAI's intelligence tools provides Argentina with a novel approach to border control and grappling with multiple challenges faced by many countries," said Maj. Gen. (Ret) Gadi Shamni, executive vice president of Land Systems at IAI. "IAI's land systems offer a range of strategic and tactical solutions targeting multiple threats. We combine technological expertise, advanced communication solutions and innovative operational concepts into a comprehensive solution."

The next border crossings awaiting installation will be at Salvador Mazza, Aguas Blancas and Puerto Iguazu.
