Aero Turbine tapped for GE J85 engine overhaul

Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Aero Turbine has received a $128.7 million contract to provide J85-GE-5/-21 engine component overhauls for the U.S. Air Force.

The J85 is a single-shaft turbojet engine built by General Electric. Military variants of the engine are used to power a variety of platforms including the T-38 Talon and the Northrop Grumman F-5.

The engine is able to produce 2,950 pounds of thrust dry, and is considered to be one of General Electric's most successful military jet engines. The U.S. Air Force plans to continue using the product through 2040.

Under the contract with the Air Force, Aero Turbine will perform the work in Stockton, Calif. The U.S. Department of Defense expects the work to be complete by July 2022.

Aero Turbine received $4.6 million at the time of the contract award. The Air Force Sustainment Center at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., is listed as the contracting activity.
