MELVILLE, N.Y., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. reports a company subsidiary is building deployable troposcatter systems for the Swedish military.

The systems provide high capacity, low-latency data links for over-the-horizon distances without reliance on satellites or multiple line-of-site repeaters.

"This contract highlights the growing need of militaries around the world to augment their existing communications toolkits with high-bandwidth, long range alternatives to satellite communications in order to enable critical communication links under a wide variety of operational scenarios," said Fred Kornberg, president and chief executive officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. "Comtech is honored to have been selected to provide this unique capability to FMV due to our unmatched experience in the development and deployment of troposcatter technology."

FMV is the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration, which issued the $2.2 million contract for the systems. The organization had conducted a multiyear evaluation of commercial off-the-shelf Comtech troposcatter products, which were later modified to meet Swedish military standards and requirements.

Comtech said it will be supplying Sweden with its MTTS deployable troposcatter terminals, which utilize Comtech's CS67500 50 Mb/s troposcatter modem, CS4400 Frequency Converter System, and 500W SSPAs to provide a quad diversity performance in a modular, highly deployable package.
