The next-generation fighter was developed and built by Chengdu Aircraft Industries Group, an Aviation Industry Corporation of China subsidiary.

It made its maiden flight in 2011.

The twin jet, fifth-generation jet is part of Beijing's military modernization efforts.

Also known as Airshow China, the event has become one of the largest of its kind. A number of Chinese-made weapons are expected to be on sale to buyers in Asia and Africa. China's Caihong-5 "Rainbow" surveillence and combat drone, recently approved for export, may also draw potential buyers. The CH-5 draws comparisons to the United States' MQ-9 Reaper hunter-killer drone.
