Lockheed and Elbit to team up on U.K. Challenger 2 tank bid

Team will bid for the U.K. Ministry of Defense contract to upgrade the tanks.

AMPTHILL, England, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin UK announced Wednesday it is teaming with Elbit Systems UK to bid on the British military's Challenger 2 tank upgrade.

The two companies will submit a proposal to undertake the vehicle's life extension project, an effort that would see the battle tanks remain in service until 2035, Lockheed said in a statement.

Lockheed Martin UK is the prime contractor for the Warrior Capability Sustainment Program, which involves upgrading at least 380 armored fighting vehicles for the British army.

The company is also designing and delivering 245 AJAX vehicle turrets.

Lockheed said the partnership will combine its armored fighting vehicle experience with Elbit's expertise in life extension programs and obsolescence management across more than 3,000 platforms.

BAE Systems announced in June it was teaming with General Dynamics Land Systems-UK, General Dynamics Mission Systems-International, Leonardo-Finmeccanica, Moog, QinetiQ and Safran Electronics to upgrade the tank.
