WASHINGTON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- The maritime variant of the V-22 Osprey has received an official U.S. Navy designation and will serve as a Carrier Onboard Delivery aircraft.

The official Navy designation for the tilt-rotar Bell Boeing aircraft is CMV-22B, the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command reported.

The Navy plans for a fleet of 44 CMV-22B aircraft, equipped with an extended-range fuel system, a high-frequency radio and a public address system.

Bell Boeing production of the CMV-22B is to begin in fiscal 2018. Deliveries of the aircraft will begin in 2020.

Carrier Onboard Delivery aircraft provide Joint Force Maritime Component Commanders with time-critical, long-range aerial logistics support by transporting personnel, mail and priority cargo from advance bases to the carriers at sea.
