WASHINGTON, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Russia's latest deep-water search-and-rescue vehicle vehicle has entered service with the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet.

The vehicle, known as Bester-1 has been stored on the vessel Alagez, joining the Arsenal 79 Pacific Fleet Rescue Squad. After performing tasks onboard Alagez, Bester-1 will join the search-and-rescue support vessel Igor Belousov.

The Russian Defense Ministry says Bester-1 is capable of reaching a diving depth of almost 2,300 feet, and is equipped with new propulsion, steering and targeting systems.

Igor Belousov's crew is scheduled to transition to Vladivostok following sea trials later in 2016.

The submersible vessel was developed by the Lazurit Design Bureau, and constructed at Admiraleyskie Verfi.
