LONDON, May 2 (UPI) -- General Dynamics UK has received new contracts from Britain’s Ministry of Defense to provide support for Bowman radio systems used by the country’s military.

The Bowman communications system by General Dynamics is a family of tactical radios that provides secure integrated voice and data capabilities to dismounted troops as well as to soldiers in vehicles and at command headquarters.

Under the two five-year contracts, General Dynamics will provide design, engineering and support for the system, the Ministry of Defense said. Additional information on contract provisions was not disclosed. However, the ministry said its $614.6 million investment would sustain 140 jobs at General Dynamics’ facility in south Wales, lead to improved management of the radios and repair services, and allow competition within the supply chain.

“For more than a decade, Bowman radios have played a vital role on operations, helping our personnel communicate sensitive information,” said Minister for Defense Equipment, Support and Technology Philip Dunne

“I am delighted that these significant contracts will protect 140 skilled engineering jobs in south Wales, allow us to deliver better value for money for the taxpayer, and, most importantly, ensure personnel on operations have the secure equipment they need.”
