ENFIELD, England, June 26 (UPI) -- Radar technology from Britain's Kelvin Hughes LLC has been tested on the U.S. Navy's Stiletto stealth demonstrator.
The Stiletto is a vessel designed for use in littoral waters. It is of pentamaran-design and can carry 12 special operations troops, as well as surveillance equipment and weapons.
The Navy is evaluating the Stiletto demonstrator, and providing suppliers of components and other materials immediate feedback on their performance in realistic military environments.
Kelvin Hughes, a global supplier of navigation and surveillance systems, supplied its solid-state SharpEye radar for a recent demonstration. It also supplied its Naval MantaDigital radar display software for integration with SharpEye radar.
The SharpEye sensor operates in X-band frequency and is contained in the up mast antenna turning unit.
The company said it improves signal performance by reducing the length of wave guide typically required, and enhances detection of small targets in heavy rain and high sea states through its patented pulse sequence and Doppler processing.
"The SharpEye radars provide the operator with the best situational awareness picture of any current surface search or navigation radar," said Adrian Pilbeam, vice president of Kelvin Hughes LLC. "Apart from the obvious maritime security applications, this performance benefit is also being used in many other areas for detection of small targets such as VTS and coastal surveillance applications, land surveillance and infrastructure security."
