UNTERSCHLEISSHEIM, Germany, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- A new generation of radar transmit and receive modules has been developed by Cassidian of Germany, the company announced.
The modules, Cassidian said, specifically enhance the multi-mode and multi-tasking capabilities of Active Electronically Scanned Array radars while "significantly" reducing production costs.
"Our new-generation modules increase radar performance, while the cost of production is reduced by more than 30 percent," says Elmar Compans, head of the Sensors and Electronic Warfare unit at Cassidian.
Unlike conventional systems, AESA radars can perform several tasks almost simultaneously. The transmitting energy is generated directly in the antenna through a multitude of transmit and receive modules instead of through a central transmitter.
Cassidian said it has optimized the production of the modules and it expects that with the lowering of production costs, AESA radars will be used more widely in reconnaissance and surveillance systems.
Cassidian is a subsidiary of the multinational EADS group, which has headquarters in the Netherlands.
