Britain orders night vision systems

ROANOKE, Va., April 2 (UPI) -- Britain's armed forces are to receive Generation 3 head-mounted night vision systems from ITT Exelis of the United States through $33 million contract.

The award is the result of a U.S. Foreign Military Sales award for the head-mounted night vision system, which will be a variant of the AN/PVS-14 used by U.S. military forces.

ITT Exelis said the HMNVS being supplied will have enhanced resolution for target recognition and identification from an auto-gated image intensifier tube with a higher figure of merit.

The figure of merit is used to specify maximum tube performance for export purposes, it said.

The auto-gated I² tube protects the tube during use in high light conditions. It also gives a clearer output in dust or fog conditions.

"We are excited to provide our Generation 3 Pinnacle product to the U.K. Ministry of Defense, a strong international ally, in support of its force modernization initiatives," said Nick Bobay, vice president and general manager of the ITT Exelis night vision business area.

"Our team is dedicated to providing the world's finest night vision capability to the U.S. Department of Defense and our international allies."
