NASHUA, N.H., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- BAE Systems announced a milestone for its next-generation surveillance technology under development for the U.S. military following a successful flight test.
BAE says a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter integrated with its Autonomous Real-Time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance Imaging System successfully completed an initial flight test.
The ARGUS-IS technology is designed to provide next-generation real-time video coverage in combat zones strengthening situational awareness and surveillance capabilities. The first flight test of the system marks a milestone in the development of the technology.
"The ARGUS-IS system overcomes the fundamental limitations of current airborne surveillance systems," Steven Wein, BAE Systems optical sensor systems director, said in a statement.
"Very high-resolution imaging systems required for vehicle and dismount tracking typically have a 'soda-straw' view that is too small for persistent coverage. Existing wide-area systems have either inadequate resolution or require multiple passes or revisits to get updates."
