Black Hawk assembly takes place in Poland

STRATFORD, Conn., June 15 (UPI) -- Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. announced a milestone achievement following the first assembly of a Black Hawk helicopter outside of the United States.

U.S. company Sikorsky says the major components of a S-70i Black Hawk helicopter have been assembled at the company's partner facility PZL Mielec located in Poland.

The assembly includes an S-70i cabin produced at Mielec that was fitted to a tail cone produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries and a cockpit section produced by Florida-based Kaman Aerospace. Company officials say the assembly is the first assembly step outside of the United States for the S-70i Black Hawk marking a milestone for the helicopter program.

"The joining of aircraft number one in Poland is a defining moment for the S-70i helicopter program," Jeffrey Pino, Sikorsky president, said in a statement.

"This platform will accommodate customer demand with an affordable, capable, and adaptable aircraft that remains true to the Black Hawk helicopter's legendary combat-proven heritage. Now this proven, dependable aircraft will extend its capabilities to customers around the world, bringing robust performance and the latest in rotorcraft technology."
