BAE awarded howitzer production deals

HATTIESBURG, Miss., May 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Marine Corps has contracted BAE Systems to deliver M777 howitzer artillery weapons.

British company BAE was awarded a follow-on contract from the Marines for 38 of the M777 howitzer guns. Company officials also announced the Canadian Department of National Defense contracted BAE for 25 of the howitzers as part of the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program.

The Marine Corps and Canadian orders, which total approximately $118 million, will be produced at BAE's Mississippi facility and in the United Kingdom.

"The purchase of additional howitzers is further endorsement of M777 and we expect more orders through 2009," Ian McMillan, BAE Global Combat Systems' Artillery program director, said in a statement.
