Aerojet awarded LC Stage II demo deal

SACRAMENTO, May 18 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force has contracted Aerojet for the delivery and demonstration of an upper-stage motor for use in future rocket-launch applications.

U.S. company Aerojet was awarded the contract from the Air Force's 526th Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Systems Group in Utah.

Under the $46 million Large Class Stage II technology-demonstration contract, Aerojet will develop a modern 92-inch diameter upper-stage motor for flight demonstration.

According to a news release, the new upper-stage motor will be used for several launch applications requirements, including "strategic deterrence, conventional strike and rapid space response."

"The Large Class Stage II technology demonstration program is destined to become another example of the outstanding teamwork between Aerojet and the Air Force," Dick Bregard, Aerojet vice president of defense programs, said in a statement.

"We look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence with the development of the next generation of solid upper-stage systems."
