Raydiance delivers laser to NAVSEA

PETALUMA, Calif., April 22 (UPI) -- Raydiance Corp. has delivered an ultrafast laser technology to the U.S. Navy under a contract with the Naval Sea Systems Command.

U.S. company Raydiance said it has delivered to the Navy a commercial-grade ultrafast laser capable of generating pulses 500 femtoseconds long. Company officials said the femtosecond laser technology was developed under a research and development deal with NAVSEA.

Company officials said the delivery of the femtosecond (one quadrillionth of a second) technology marks a milestone for the company and is the "world's first commercial-grade ultrafast laser," according to a news release.

"The delivery of this high-energy system to NAVSEA is an important milestone for Raydiance and the ultrafast industry as a whole, as it will open up a number of defense and commercial applications," Scott Davison, Raydiance president, said in the release.

"Our engineering and manufacturing teams have shown that they can scale our core discovery platform technology to achieve high-pulse energy while maintaining a compact, fiber-based architecture."
