Harris acquires Tyco's Wireless Systems

MELBOURNE, Fla., April 17 (UPI) -- U.S. company Harris Corp. announced the acquisition of Tyco Electronics' Wireless Systems mission-critical communications systems business unit.

Harris, an international communications and information technology company, has signed an agreement to purchase the Wireless Systems business unit from Tyco Electronics Ltd. for $675 million in cash.

The acquisition, subject to post-closing adjustments, is part of an effort by Harris to expand the market reach of its Radio Frequency Communications business segment. Wireless Systems was formerly known as M/A-COM.

"The combination of RF Communications and Wireless Systems creates a powerful supplier in the global land mobile-radio systems market," Howard Lance, Harris chairman, president and chief executive, said in a statement.

"With an 80-year heritage in providing communications for the public-safety market, Wireless Systems has established a large installed customer base, extensive domain knowledge and well-developed sales channels, which serve the federal, state and local public-safety markets."
