CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has contracted BBN Technologies to provide media-translation technologies to support foreign-media monitoring.

Officials said the M3S automatically transcribes and translates real-time audio streams of foreign-language media and provides the Army with a greater situational awareness on foreign deployments.

"BBN's Multimedia Monitoring Systems help break down the language barrier and increase our understanding of the news, events and responses that shape attitudes around the world," Tad Elmer, BBN Technologies president and chief executive, said in a statement.

"That understanding is critical to our military's ability to operate effectively around the world."
