British contract for Typhoon maintenance

LONDON, March 6 (UPI) -- The British Ministry of Defense has contracted BAE Systems to provide its Typhoon fighter aircraft fleet with maintenance and support services.

British company BAE was awarded the contract from British Defense Equipment and Support. Under the approximately $635 million contract, BAE will provide maintenance services on the Royal Air Force's fleet of Typhoon aircraft.

Officials said BAE, as part of the Typhoon Availability Service contract, would work with engine developer Rolls-Royce to ensure the Typhoon's operational readiness.

"This contract will ensure the Typhoon fleet is able to meet its operational commitments and will continue to deliver as a world-class capability as the cornerstone of the United Kingdom's air-defense capabilities," Quentin Davies, minister for Defense Equipment and Support, said in a statement.

"We are committed to building strong partnering arrangements with U.K. industry, in this case to get more efficient support for our front-line Typhoon fighter force."
