BAE delivers two M-ATVs for evaluation

ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 27 (UPI) -- BAE Systems announced it has submitted two new mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles for evaluation in response to a solicitation from the U.S. military.

The Army recently called on the defense community to design an MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle that is lighter and more mobile than the current MRAP vehicles in order to address the challenges of Afghanistan's rugged terrain.

British company BAE announced its U.S. Combat Systems unit and Global Tactical Systems business have each delivered an M-ATV variant for testing and evaluation.

The U.S. Combat Systems M-ATV is based on the company's RG-33 MRAP vehicle and has "completed thousands of test miles and scores of blast and ballistic tests," the company said in a release.

Officials said BAE's Global Tactical Systems unit submitted an M-ATV prototype based on the company's widely deployed Caiman MRAP vehicle.

"Our M-ATV provides urgent life-saving technology, multi-mission effectiveness and operational agility not currently available to the Army," Regis Luther, BAE vice president of light tactical vehicles, said in a statement.

"We combined the industry's best in combat-vehicle survivability and mine blast-resistant platforms to develop our M-ATV."
