MCKINNEY, Texas, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has modified a contract with Raytheon Co. for the company to provide additional infrared-sensor systems for ground combat.
U.S. company Raytheon was awarded the contract modification for the delivery of additional Horizontal Technology Integration Second Generation-Forward Looking Infrared Block 1 A/B-Kits.
Under the $173 million deal, Raytheon will supply the Army with 6,153 more of its Horizontal Technology Integration SG-FLIR kits that will go to support ground combat operations.
Officials said the Horizontal Technology Integration SG-FLIR kits, widely deployed by the Army on a variety of platforms, are designed to provide troops with enhanced situational awareness in good and poor lighting conditions.
"SG-FLIR is a core infrared sensor supporting fire control and surveillance on several critical U.S. Army ground combat systems," Bernie Smith, Raytheon Horizontal Technology Integration senior program manager, said in a statement.
"This award also includes foreign military sales to Iraqi and Egyptian forces to provide thermal-receiver upgrades for M1 Abrams tanks."
