American Rheinmetall Munitions, a subsidiary of German company Rheinmetall Defense, said the Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine located at the Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland has approved the company's Mk281 ammunition for partial integration at the NTC in California.

American Rheinmetall Munitions said its Mk281, which the company calls a green ammunition, contains no toxic chemicals or energetic materials, which addresses a Defense Department directive to purchase environmentally friendly ammunition for use at U.S. training ranges.

The Army is currently using the M918 40mm training cartridge, which is "due to phase out in favor of newer munitions when the U.S. industrial base is ready," the release said.
