BAE opens facility for L-Rod production

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- To meet growing demand, BAE Systems Monday opened a new production facility in Texas to manufacture armor kits for U.S. Army ground vehicles.

The new 33,000-square-foot facility, located in Austin, Texas, was established to meet production orders BAE has with the Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, Life Cycle Management Command and the Marine Corps Systems Command.

British company BAE says the facility will manufacture its trademarked L-Rod bar-armor kits that are integrated into military ground vehicles to protect troops in combat zones. Officials say the new facility will allow BAE to produce its L-Rod kits more quickly and at a lower cost.

"From the beginning, the L-Rod team has been motivated by the recognition that this product saves lives," Bill Kellner, L-Rod program manager for BAE Systems, said in a statement.

"Our commitment to our troops and their families has led to innovations and enhancements in design, and now to a new manufacturing capability that will allow us to deliver this equipment to the front lines faster and more efficiently."
