British army receives enhanced tanks

LONDON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- The British Ministry of Defense has received more than 100 upgraded tanks from BAE Systems to support operations in Afghanistan.

British company BAE was awarded an urgent operational requirement contract from the British Ministry of Defense.

Under the approximately $27.7 million deal, BAE upgraded more than 100 of the British army's light tanks with improved engines and other enhancements to support operations in the demanding conditions of Afghanistan, the British Ministry of Defense reported.

"Our trials have proven major performance and reliability improvements," Jim Graham, BAE Systems spokesman, said in a statement.

"We received a post-design service contract in December last year and have effectively condensed a three-year development program into one year, partly by beginning work in advance of the contract, taking business risks with the Ministry of Defense and consulting the key stakeholder."
