ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 12 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has contracted Lockheed Martin to support a ship modernization program with machinery and engineering services.
U.S. company Lockheed Martin was contracted by the Navy to support the modernization of the DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, the Navy's guided missile destroyers. Under the $15 million deal, Lockheed Martin will provide machinery control system shipsets.
Lockheed Martin, which was awarded two previous DDG 51-class ship modernization contracts, will provide its machinery control system, which company officials say centralizes and enables remote control of selected machinery on the ship.
"This modernization effort will replace aging equipment that is costly to support, trim the number of machinery control consoles and reduce watch stander workload to operate the stations," Jim Craig, Lockheed Martin Simulation, Training and Support vice president of ground, maritime and civil solutions, said in a statement.
"This contract will yield significant savings in life-cycle support costs for the Navy, and it continues our long history of providing machinery control systems for its surface combatant ships."
