BOSTON, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy's DDG 1000 destroyer's computer infrastructure has received an upgraded baseline architecture software.
Raytheon delivered a software build for the Total Ship Computing Environment Infrastructure (TSCEI) Release 4.0 that will be used on future design work of the warship's large-scale onboard computer system.
"TSCEI Release 4.0 is a major milestone for the DDG 1000 software team," said Bob Martin, head of the system software development for the DDG 1000 project. "It is another outstanding accomplishment to deliver an open architecture, standards-based infrastructure to our development sites."
The open architecture allows a large number of commercial software developers and subcontractors to take part in the development of the system that will eventually run virtually every system aboard the cutting-edge destroyers.
Raytheon said in a news release Tuesday that among the features of TSCEI Release 4.0 is the ability to support robust IBM blade-server processors that run the Linux operating system.
The Navy has been using the same concept on the Ship Self Defense System MK 2 by deploying the TSCEI 3.0 version. Raytheon said the M2 is the first ship system to meet the Navy's Open Architecture Computing Environment standards.
The MK 2 system is slated for deployment starting next year to the aircraft carrier Nimitz and the amphibious ships San Antonio and the as yet unnamed LHA-6
