The director of security for Kuwait City, Brig. Mahmud al-Dusayri, told the Kuwait News Agency the wounded American was being treated at Al-Razi Hospital.

The Americans were attacked by a person armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, Al-Dusayri said, and cartridges were found in the Americans' car. The shooting took place at an intersection on a road leading to Camp Doha, the main base of U.S. forces in Kuwait. There are currently some 15,000 U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf oil emirate.

A U.S. military build up in Kuwait is underway in preparation for a possible war on Iraq, analysts said.

The deputy premier and minister of interior, Shaykh Muhammad al-Khalid al-Sabah, and the undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Lt. Gen. Nasir al-Uthman, rushed to the scene of the incident, KUNA reported.

No further details were available from the U.S. Embassy.
