MIAMI, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Popular U.S. syndicated columnist Dave Barry is taking a break from writing his weekly humor column after 30 years of entertaining and enlightening readers.
Barry, 57, announced Tuesday he will be on hiatus for at least one year, but could stay out longer, the Miami Herald reported Wednesday.
The celebrated journalist said he wants to stay home with his wife and 4-year-old daughter after a hectic summer traveling for political conventions, the Summer Olympics in Athens and a book promotion tour.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, the only humorist to win the coveted journalism award, has been based at the Miami Herald for the past 20 years.
Although Barry's absence will leave a void in the more than 500 newspapers carrying his Sunday column, the writer said readers can find humor other places.
"And they can actually read the news, which is hilarious. That's all I read. I just read the papers and go, 'Well, that's stupid'. And I write 800 words and when it boils down to it, it's 'Well, that was stupid.' They can do that without me," Barry said.
