GROTON, Conn., March 5 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Electric Boat has announced receipt of two contract modifications from the U.S. Navy with a combined value of $35.8 million.
The first contract, valued at $19.8 million, is for Electric Boat to perform advanced submarine research and development studies in support of a wide range of technology areas. Among them: manufacturability, maintainability, survivability, hydrodynamics, acoustics and materials.
Electric Boat will also conduct research and development work in manning, hull integrity, performance, ship control, logistics, weapons handling and safety.
The contract supports near-term Virginia-class submarine technology insertion, future submarine concepts and core technologies.
The modification is to a 2010 award.
Under the second, worth $16 million, the company will continue development of the Common Missile Compartment for the U.S. Ohio-class replacement submarine. The company will procure missile tube long-lead-time material and design and manufacture hardware.
Electric Boat is scheduled to begin construction of the next-generation ballistic missile submarine in 2021.
