Hexagon takes over Aibotix

NACKA STRAND, Sweden, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Swedish visualization solutions company Hexagon has acquired Aibotix, a German manufacturer of drone aircraft systems.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed but Hexagon said the move adds to its photogrammetric and mapping technologies portfolio.

"The Aibotix acquisition is an important addition to Hexagon's photogrammetric and mapping technologies portfolio," Hexagon President and Chief Executive Officer Ola Rollen said. "The growing number of applications for UAV-based solutions offers huge growth potential, especially in areas that require frequent and local updates, such as smart city applications, dynamic GIS, and emergency response."

Aibotix, headquartered in Kassel, Germany, manufactures the Aibot X6, a new generation of vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicle, designed for industrial inspection, aerial mapping, surveying, utility and security markets.

Hexagon said the UAV is ideal for delivering up-to-date geospatial information and aiding in hard to reach areas -- such as difficult infrastructure inspections of power lines, bridges and dams to locally focused mapping tasks of buildings or any vertical structure.
